Four Perfect Beers:
1. Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye Ale (CA, US)
This is the ideal balance between the hoppiness of an India Pale Ale and the pleasures of a high alcohol brew (8% abv). Somehow Bear Republic have managed to bring these two worlds together (hops and alcohol) to create a sweet and heady drinking experience.
2. Moo Brew Imperial Stout (Tasmania, Aus)
Not your classic Guiness variety stout. Rather, this is a complex and free-wheeling taste wonderland. A friend describes it as a supermarket queue of flavours; hops and bitterness lead the way, while coffee and chocolate notes walk hand-in-hand with caramel aftertastes. Everytime this little gift is tapped I find my footsteps magically arranged towards the Local.
3. Unibroue La Fin du Monde (Quebec, Canada)
A deliciously sweet and finely balanced Belgian style beer from French Canada. I consumed a dozen bottles of this over the course of 2010. It still lingers on the taste-buds a year later. I’m no longer crazy on Belgian or Trappist style beers (they’re just a little too much for me nowadays), but Unibroue’s La Fin du Monde and Maudite still please in so many diverse and delicious ways.
4. Paulaner Heffe-Weissbier (Germany)
This is one of those classic German wheat beers. But thank goodness, it doesn’t taste like those miniature, banana lollies. Perfect for a hot summers day – refreshing, sweet and extremely drinkable.
